A bit more on A-Life...

Artificial life can be in three forms - software, biological, and robotic. The "soft" kind is what Hugh Ogden does in Place. Individual A-life creatures - automata or bots - have almost no identity by themselves but can be programmed through any number of algorithms to behave communally in a variety of ways. It is not beyond possibility that a community can be taught to behave and evolve according to fear, faith, and any other trait that a highly skilled theorist might try to define in a chain of mathematical operations.
